Mars Hill Widening The widening of Mars Hill Road was started in 1999 and public meetings were held in 2000. The construction funding is 100% GDOT, and GDOT paid for 100% of the land cost. Oconee County paid 100% of the design, 20% of the utility relocation, and 100% of the right of way acquisition costs. Oconee County has spent approximately $2.2 million on design, and one half-million on utility relocation and acquisition services.
The widening will be done in Phases: Phase I is from SR 316 to Butler's Crossing
Phase II is from Butler's Crossing to the 441 Bypass
Phase III is from 441 Bypass to Main Street
The completion of this project is scheduled to be completed in May of 2018.
