Mission:  The mission of the Planning Department is to assist the Board of Commissioners in planning orderly growth and development, insuring that development guidelines and regulations are followed in the establishment of subdivisions, commercial developments and zoning areas; and its main functions include overseeing operations of the Planning Commission, the Development Review Committee and related ordinances and documents.

Planning Commission Information:  The Oconee County Planning Commission is a joint endeavor between Oconee County and the cities of Bishop, Bogart, North High Shoals and Watkinsville.  Started in the 1960s, the Commission currently has twelve members – eight appointed by the Oconee County Board of Commissioners and one appointed by each city’s Mayor and Council.

The Commission reviews rezone and special use requests and forwards their recommendation to the appropriate elected body depending on jurisdiction.

Planning Commission meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. in Courtroom 1 in the Oconee County Courthouse on the third Monday each month.  Agendas are published in the Oconee Enterprise on the Thursday before each meeting and are available on the county web site.

Development Review Committee Information:  The Development Review Committee was created in the mid-1990s to assist developers with permitting new construction.  The committee is made up of representatives from the following Departments:  Planning, Public Works, Code Enforcement, Environmental Health, Utility, Emergency Management and Fire.

The DRC reviews and approves construction plans for new residential and commercial subdivisions as well as the site development plans for commercial and multi-family lots.  They review Preliminary Plats & Site Plans for approval.

Meetings start at 9:00 a.m. an are held in the Planning Department office at 22 N. Main Street.  Please see schedule below.
